TIGERLILY
125 George Street,
Edinburgh
What is it? Tigerlily is the flagship venue for the Montpellier group in Edinburgh. The venue is set in a beautiful Georgian townhouse on George Street in the capital's New Town. It is made up of a nightclub called Lulu (that seems to be bursting at the seams every night with well-off students splashing Mummy and Daddy's cash); 33 boutique hotel-style bedrooms; and a bar restaurant where I, inevitably, spend my time. Some might feel it's slightly feminine but it is definitely luxurious with shimmering mirrors and dazzling chandeliers in a subtle Asian theme which gives the place an opulent feel.
Interesting fact The company is big on training and has launched online modules for the hospitality trade which include cocktail, wine, waiter and bartender training and are designed to help companies get the best out of their staff.
Verdict Edinburgh has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to good cocktail bars. That is, largely, down to the group which owns Tigerlily. It has always invested in getting the right staff because behind all the cool furniture and ambient lighting you need good staff or customers will just not come back. I don't know if it ever quite lived up to its launch aim of being the equal of London's top bars but it certainly is a leading light in Edinburgh's style bar scene.
Signature drink There is a great selection of beers, wines and spirits but the cocktails are the main attraction for the in-crowd. I enjoyed a £7.95 mojito with Brugal rum, mint, lime and sugar which instead of soda had some fiery ginger beer.
Prices Certainly not the cheapest but there are regular specials which would grace any bar. Pint of lager £4.35; small wine £4.95.
Food The restaurant seems to be always busy. The way in which the place is designed makes the bar and restaurant flow together. I had a tasty Thai green curry with Jasmine rice from the day menu which was £12.95.
Alfresco there is a cool indoor smoking area for folks of that persuasion.
Children Allowed in the restaurant at all times.
Toilets Lovely toilets, far nicer than many bars.
Avoid If you prefer your drinking establishments a little more manly.
Perfect for taking your loved one out for a nice meal then a couple of cocktails.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
