The Douglas Hotel Bar

Brodick

Isle of Arran

What is it? After years of being an eyesore on the waterfront of Brodick, The Douglas has recently been refurbished and reopened. The impressive 21-room hotel is the first thing you see as you step off the ferry. It's not grand as such but inside it has a great blend of classic and modern decor, with luxurious leather sofas, dark wood flooring and panelling, and modern but comfortable furniture. There's even a framed hockey shirt on the wall which was a bit random.

Interesting fact The owner of The Douglas is a local lad who, after leaving Arran, found himself in the property game and became a multi-millionaire. He now lives in Russia and apparently he restored the hotel as a labour of love. Although when I was there it was very busy so he's probably making a few quid as well.

Verdict Truth be known I wasn't expecting much when I stepped into the bar. I thought it was going to be all show with no substance but I was proved wrong. The staff were excellent, especially the bartender who made the cocktails. The bar area is a lovely place to hang out and you can easily lose a few hours relaxing in the opulent surroundings. It is quite rare to get a standard as high as this in touristy destinations. The only negative was the actual bar – it was just not big enough or the focal point of the room.

Signature drink I started with a Manhattan cocktail which was not on the menu but was made with ease by the bartender. Instead of bourbon I had Arran Single Malt stirred with sweet vermouth, cocktail bitters and some orange zest which cost £7.50.

Food There is a great wee bar menu with lots of sharing platters and lovely nibbles. I opted for the fish and chips which was superb and well-priced at £8.95

Price I thought the prices were great for the ambience and service. Pint of lager from £3.20 and cocktails from £5.50.

Children Allowed in to bar area

Toilets Again finished to a very high standard, nothing in this place seems to have been scrimped on.

Alfresco A huge terrace at the front with the best views in Brodick.

Avoid if you were looking for a more authentic pub on your Arran visit.

Perfect for stepping off the ferry and straight into the bar for a malt and then a couple of cocktails.
