Q. Although it's been exciting pulling out my winter coats from last year and updating them for the new season, I'm now beginning to feel a little deflated. After convincing myself I could keep this up right through until spring I now realise I've been fooling myself - I need a new coat and I want one NOW!

A. One of my favourite things about fall fashion is allowing myself to invest in a fabulous coat for the winter months ahead.  Any woman who denies herself this essential purchase is bound to end up with feelings of regret come December.

There is not a more practical way to make a fashion statement than through your outerwear.  Looking stylish whilst keeping warm and comfy is the one luxury every woman should afford herself each winter season.  So, if you haven't already indulged yourself in the most justified fashion purchase of the year then make the decision to do so now.  Take your pick and let the great cover up commence.

This season there really are no rules when it comes to choosing the perfect coat that suits your lifestyle and preferred personal style.  The coat is big news in fashion right now and the options available are endless.  From masculine oversized borrowed from your boyfriend styles to teddy bear faux fur and ladylike peacoats.  Ooh decisions, decisions…

Ooze androgynous glamour in a minimal lightweight coat worn with a boyfriend blazer underneath.  This ultraclean look is sleek, sophisticated and easy to wear.  Look out for cashmere and wool mixes, which will be warm without the bulk and weight of a 100% wool coat.  This style is also perfect for taking through into spring.

Oversized is probably the trendiest shape and for the avant-garde of you out there the bigger the better.

This style lends itself well to layering and the biggest shapes can even take on wearing a teddy bear jacket underneath for those extra cold days.  And yes, if it feels cosy enough you can even brave bearing your legs to add a sexy edge.

If you would rather take a more feminine approach to this mannish trend choose a pleated ladylike frock coat with a luxuriously big soft cosy collar, balance tailored trousers with an open front blouse to add elegance and chic.
