What it is: Bar Gumbo was born around a year and half ago on this busy stretch of Byers Road, and was one of the first establishments that offered a taste of the Deep South in Glasgow. The bar and restaurant prides itself on a Louisiana-style food, drink and music offering and has worked hard at perfecting its presentation. The comfy restaurant area offers a haven for those eating while the blues bands play, and those after a more lively experience can hang by the other side of the bar benefitting from the full music experience and enjoying pulled pork, home-made gumbo and ribs, and sampling the rum and bourbon collection.
The verdict: We visited on a Sunday evening and were chuffed to find some of Glasgow's finest musicians, The Shiverin' Sheiks and Les Johnson, playing a chilled-out set in the bar. The staff are friendly and attentive and the atmosphere is warm and inviting with plenty of cosy corners to relax in, if the entertainment isn't your thing.
Interesting fact: Gumbo is often cited as an example of the melting pot nature of Louisiana cooking, and trying to sort out the origins and evolution of the dish is highly speculative. The name derives from a West African word for okra.
Al fresco: There are a few tables and chairs dotted out on the street, when the weather allows.
Food: We ordered far too much to share but enjoyed it all, especially at the very reasonable prices. The hushpuppies at £2.50, ribs and wings platter at £10.95 and the bayou hot wings at £5.50 stood out.
Drinks: Wine from a decent selection starts from £3.25 and bottled beers range from £3.20 to £4. We ended the night sampling the huge selection of bourbons and whiskeys from £3.20 to £6.50.
Perfect for: Pretending you are in America; enjoying top class entertainment, wholesome grub and a great drinks selection.
Kids: Child-friendly during the day
Avoid if: You prefer amuse bouche and petit fours with your chablis.
