Known to tourists as the national Scottish dish, known to locals as the newspaper parcel of potato perfection, picking up a poke o' chips or a fish supper for some post-party pillaging is many a Yelper's favourite thing to do.
Here are some tasty spots in Glasgow and Edinburgh for your tasting pleasure!
Burger Meats Bun
48A West Regent Street, Glasgow
John B raves about the "hand cut chips with sea salt - which were as good as my auld Da' used to make. They tasted like they'd been par fried and left to cool before being put back in the fryer to crisp up to perfection. The chips almost, but not quite, stole the show from the fantastic burgers."
The Tailend
14-15 Albert Place, Leith Walk, Edinburgh
"The fish and chips are the reason you are here. A large piece of fish is lightly battered and perfectly fried. The meal comes with a small side of garden peas or mushy peas, and a huge mound of chips. The chips are thick cut, and are crisp on the outside, and smooth and creamy in the middle," says Veronica P.
Pommes Frites
476 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow
"The fries are big and twice fried to perfection, they are soft on the inside and crispy, crunchy perfection on the outside. The seasoning was perfect and the mayo was creamy and luxurious," says Pammi G.
Burger
94A Fountainbridge, Edinburgh
Tom S loved the chips here; "light and fluffy and not a speck of grease anywhere."
The Chippy Doon the Lane
McCormick Lane off Buchanan Street, Glasgow
George D defines chips as "nice squared cut pieces. A light crispness on the outside with a mushy, warm inside. If you like 'em well done, these ain't those. The potion is generous."
Teuchters Landing
1a and 1c Dock Place, Leith, Edinburgh
Claire C says the "chips were seasoned perfectly, crispy and came with brown, tomato and mayo sauces."
Hooked
1027 Cathcart Road, Glasgow
Steve C had "a decent sized piece of haddock and a generous portion of chips, both cooked fresh to order, in a choice of 3 batters (I went for tempura), and a wee slice of lemon too. The chips were great too, crispy on the outside and nicely soft on the inside."
Bar Kohl
54 George VI Bridge, Edinburgh
Lucia A tried "a portion of hand-cut chips and a portion of sweet potato chips which has a yummy cajun seasoning on them, very scrummy."
Ox & Finch
920 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow
Take your chips to a whole new level with "truffle salt and roasted garlic aioli." Jennie H says, "they were amazing."
The Golden Bite
102 Portobello High Street, Edinburgh
Craig N says, "let me tell you I've had a few chippies in my time, some might even consider me a chippy snob, but this is up there with the best that I've had. The chips are perfect - nicely rectangular and full of flavour."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
