Cambo Gardens
The Stables Visitor Centre, Cambo, Kingsbarns, Fife, KY16 8QD
With clever design and plant choices, the summer months at Cambo are when this 2.5-acre Georgian walled garden really comes into its own. The garden’s diverse topography allows visitors to enjoy enchanting views from many different vistas; including the sparkling waterfall of the Cambo burn which is beautifully framed by a giant weeping willow and charming tea house bridges.
Within the walled garden, dancing Dieramas mingle with dark and moody Agapanthus, whilst the pale pink Osteospermum underplanting of these beds shine all summer long. A collaborative staff and student planting effort, which runs as part of Cambo’s Modern Apprenticeship Horticulture programme, sees the addition of herbs and edible flowers, truly bringing the garden to life.
Cambo also boasts a recently renovated glasshouse range, three of which are open to the public. Visitors can enjoy the unique character of each house including foodie inspired “Chilli Con Cambo” with its array of edible goodies, as well as the more relaxed, sensory house with its diverse habitats.
Nominated by Historic Houses as ‘Garden of the Year’, Cambo is home to the finest North American Prairie planting in Scotland. The garden’s prairie grasses grow up to 12-foot tall in places, offering a truly immersive visitor experience.
The recent restoration of Cambo’s historic stables has created a vibrant new visitor hub including a cosy café, an ethically sourced Tack Room shop featuring many local suppliers and regular innovative exhibitions. For the next six weeks at Cambo there are two exhibitions by local artists Jenny Moran and Phillipa Mitchell.
Managed by Cambo Heritage Trust, the gardens support a new generation of trainees, volunteers and modern apprentices in horticulture, who all add youth, energy and innovation to the all-season gardens, resulting in a dynamic and evolving horticultural experience for all visitors.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
