Hollywood star Johnny Depp has been trounced in the box office by a marmalade-loving bear.

Crime caper Mortdecai, the new Hollywood film starring Depp alongside big names Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor and Paul Bettany, opened in the UK on Friday, following a blaze of publicity from its all-star cast.

But box office figures from Rentrak show that the big-budget film, which has been panned by critics, took only £484,878 in its opening weekend.

Meanwhile Paddington, featuring Ben Whishaw voicing the role of the duffle coat wearing bear, took £748,628 at the weekend, despite it being its ninth week in UK cinemas.

Paddington bear's big-screen outing, also starring Hugh Bonneville, Peter Capaldi and Nicole Kidman and based on the books by Michael Bond, has made almost £35 million in the UK box office since its release on November 28 last year.

The figures come following a string of other flops for Pirates Of The Caribbean star Depp, with recent movies Transcendence and The Lone Ranger failing to set the box office alight.

But the actor has insisted that he is unperturbed by his movie turkeys, telling Details magazine last year: "First, I reached a point where I cared so much and was so diligent in terms of approaching the work.

"Then you get to where you care so f*****g much that it gets goddamn beleaguering, you know?

"But then a great thing happens. Suddenly you care enough to not give a f**k, because... that's the total liberation. Being game to try anything."

Depp, who is set to wed his Rum Diaries co-star Amber Heard after splitting from long-term ex-partner Vanessa Paradis, stars as a rogue and suave art dealer while Paltrow plays his wife in Mortdecai, an adaptation of Kyril Bonfiglioli's three-part novel series.

The film took just 4.2 million dollars (£2.7 million) in the US on its reported 60 million dollars (£39 million) budget on its opening weekend.
