Legendary US drummer Steve Gadd, who contributed the iconic drum intro to Paul Simon’s classic song, Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover, and who has played and recorded with everyone from Frank Sinatra to Eric Clapton, is playing an intimate concert in the Mackintosh Church at Queens Cross, Glasgow on Saturday, September 2.

The concert is being staged due to public demand, Gadd’s group, Blicher Hemmer Gadd, having sold out the Maryhill church the previous night.

Gadd’s previous visits to the city have usually involved much bigger venues. He appeared with James Taylor at the Armadillo last October and played at the SECC with Paul Simon in 2006. Other big names he has played with include Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Bill Withers, and Rickie Lee Jones.

The Glasgow concerts are two of only three UK gigs on the 78-year-old Gadd’s latest tour with Danish musicians, saxophonist Michael Blicher and Hammond organist Dan Hemmer.

He met Blicher at a music conference in Copenhagen ten years ago and when they discovered they shared the same taste in music – Gadd favours the melodically direct soul-jazz style – they decided to get together with Hemmer and have some fun.

They have now recorded four albums. The Mackintosh Church gig coincides with the release of their fourth, It Will Be Alright, and have played over fifty concerts, mostly in small clubs where they can feel a strong connection with the audience.

Reeling in the years one more time: Steely Dan created some of the most sophisticated pop ever heard, then took 20 years off

“The music we play in Blicher Hemmer Gadd is a style of music that I’m passionate about,” says Gadd. “It’s honest music. No-one plays like this anymore.”
