Marjory Mac Sween

Published on 26/02/2021

MACSWEEN - Lady Marjory With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Lady Marjory MacSween. Wife of the late Professor Sir Roddy MacSween, irreplaceable mother of Ruth and Gordon, mother-in-law to Graeme and Jo, beloved Granny Mac to grandchildren Ben, Tess, Jamie, Sammy and Alex, she will be missed by all. She was a true force of nature in her time, and those who knew her will miss her joie de vivre, her soup, her baking, and her general enthusiasm for all things, especially family, friends, golf, and garden. Determined, strong, competitive, witty, and sharp as a tac to the end, her legendary putt-sinking, card-sharpening and crossword-solving skills and her utterly indomitable spirit will live on for some time, we suspect. A fitting Celebration of Life will be held at a later date - Ruth and Gordon will confirm when lock down allows.

I am so sad to read of Marjory’s unexpected passing. She was a lovely, brave, caring person, always full of good news. I will miss her great enthusiasm, and her regular updates of Southend. My deepest sympathy goes to Ruth, Gordon and their families.

Very happy, & very special precious memories of an 'Aunt & Great Aunt' who wasn't such, but much loved & adored as one, for all the right reasons. Always putting others before herself! We will greatly miss the fun & laughter she so readily, & naturally created all the years of her life, whatever the circumstance. A truly wonderful 'Lady' indeed! Will forever be in our hearts & thoughts.
Joan, Alan, John, Jodie, Catriona & Ross.

Seems like only yesterday herself and Toman - our favoured name for cousin Roddy, vacationed in Scalpay and Marjorie truly enjoyed the peaceful seclusion away from hustle bustle of the busy city. As a precocious youngster oneself, her calm and purposeful demeanour in conjunction with wise counsel compelled one to be attentive. Sincere condolences to both Ruth and Gordon at this sad juncture in their lives.

I can just see our friend Marjorie in every word. We remember her with real affection, it is only a few weeks since she addressed the haggis for us at our Lunch and Social Club for people living with dementia, using the Burns book presented to her mother at Glasgow High School 100 years ago. Marjorie had been a committed volunteer at the club for many years. As we remembered her yesterday it was with thankfulness for the fun and laughter she brought into our lives.
