Squash
SCOTLAND beat West Germany 2-1 to score their first victory of the
tournament in yesterday's final round of the initial section matches in
the women's world championships in Warmond, Holland. They will now meet
either England or Ireland in today's first-round play-offs.
National champion Shirley Brown survived a five-game marathon to beat
the Daniela Grzenia, 9-7 in the fifth, while Alison Cruickshank secured
Scotland's victory with a triumph over Anna Holbe. Results --

Ice skating
KURT Browning of Canada won the gold medal in the men's event at the
world figure skating championships in Paris yesterday. American
Christopher Bowman won the silver and Grzegorz Filipowski of Poland took
the bronze.
Cycling
ANDREW Ferry (Scotia Stewart Gauges) will make a strong bid for
victory in Chryston Wheelers 50 miles race at Cumbernauld on Sunday.
With support from his brother Martin he meets a full field of 50 in his
last race before representing Scotland in the Girvan pro-am three days.
The opposition is from David Gibson (G S Modena), Fergus Watt (Albany
Wheelers), Alan Miller and Graham O'Bree (Wallacehill) and Paul Sinnot
(Ivy) all prominent in recent weeks.
