A WRITING cabinet, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and worth (pounds) 1m, returned to the house for which it was intended yesterday.

The desk, bought by Glasgow City Council last year, was placed in its original abode - the drawing room of The Hill House, Helensburgh, in time for the house's annual opening to the public today.

The desk, of ebonised mahogany and mother of pearl, was made by Mackintosh for the drawing room in Walter Blackie's Helensburgh home.

It was bought, along with three other works by the Scottish artist and designer, for more than (pounds) 1.4m at a Christie's sale in London last November.

The items, including the desk, have been on show at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, in Glasgow. They now move to The Hill House for 12 weeks.

Charlotte Rostek, the property manager at The Hill House said: ''We are absolutely delighted that this beautiful piece of furniture is coming back to the house.''

The writing cabinet, which was made in 1904, was among many pieces that Mackintosh designed for The Hill House.
