THE possibility of extending the teaching year at Aberdeen University
was raised again yesterday by the principal, Professor George McNicol,
addressing a graduation ceremony.
The proposal for a 40-week instead of a 30-week year aroused
considerable opposition when it was first mooted by the principal in
1987, when the university was considering ways of overcoming a serious
financial crisis.
It was turned down by the Senate and not included in the institutional
plan submitted to the University Funding Council.
However, Professor McNicol told graduates yesterday that the
introduction of two-year Scottish Highers, together with changes in the
fee structure and the introduction of student loans, would cast grave
doubts on the long-term future of the traditional four-year honours
degrees in arts and science.
''It may well be that in the next year or two it will be worthwhile
for the university to re-examine the possibility of extending the
teaching year,'' said the principal.
The final institutional plan had been submitted to the UFC last month
and he was delighted to say that Sir Peter Swinnerton-Dyer, chief
executive of the UFC, had now told the university it was an acceptable
basis for the agreed funding for 1991-92.
Sir Peter had said that references in the plan to developing new
initiatives provided considerable grounds for optimism about the
university's future prospects.
Contrary to some press comments Sir Peter had been a good friend to
the university and no doubt, in large measure, had persuaded the
University Grants Committee to give Aberdeen special transitional
funding to help it through a difficult period of readjustment to a lower
level of income.
The following graduated at two ceremonies yesterday:

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
