SHARRON Davies, nearly 10 years after having recorded the previous

best time, set a British 200 metres individual medley record at

yesterday's Stakis City of Dundee international swim meet to provide a

scintillating start to this year's Milk In Action British grand prix

circuit.

The 26-year-old from Bracknell finished over three seconds ahead of

her challengers in 2min 15.24sec, 0.63 seconds inside the old mark that

she set in the Paris international meet in February of 1980.

It continued the superb comeback to top-class swimming for Davies, who

returned after a nine-year absence to complete in the European

championships in August, and showed she is in good form for the

Commonwealth Games in three months' time.

Sammy Purvis (Wigan Wasps) finished second to Davies in 2min 18.89sec,

with Zara Long from Beckenham in third place in 2min 18.91sec, and

Scotland's Jean Hill fifth in 2min 19.92sec.

British internationalist Paul Brew provided a Scottish victory on the

opening day with a time of 2min 3.43sec, a new meet record, in the 200

metres individual medley. The 23-year-old finished over a second ahead

of rival Grant Robins from Portsmouth, who finished in 2min 4.56sec.

Campbell McNeil just missed out on the 1500 metres freestyle when he

finished second to the British internationalist Tony Day in 15min

32.17sec. The Leeds-based Welshman took the top place in 15min 30.71sec.

June Croft (Wigan Wasps) who, like Davies, has made a fairly recent

return to international swimming, also set a meet best time in winning

the 800 metres freestyle in 8min 37.52sec ahead of Holland's Karin

Breinesse. The double Olympic medallist finished almost six seconds

ahead of the Dutch girl, with Suki Brownsdon taking third place in 8min

45.08sec.

Davies earned #150 for her record-breaking performance, but that will

pale into insignificance beside the #10,000 that Adrian Moorhouse will

earn tomorrow should he break his own 100 metre breast-stroke world

record in the special Rodeo Challenge event.
