TOWER Records, once famous for its string of in-store performances by bands like Bon Jovi, Texas, and Del Amitri, has closed its Glasgow store.

The closure of the landmark building comes after the US giant lost the battle to win back customers from rivals HMV, Virgin, and, more recently, Fopp.

The company, which came to the city in a blaze of publicity in 1990, was once a leading force in Glasgow's CD and record industry, with its Argyle Street outlet the biggest outside London.

However, in September last year the company was forced to close two-thirds of the Glasgow branch and axe staff in an attempt to stay in business.

A month later it began offering discount records and renamed itself Tower Outlet. But the opening of Fopp in Union street was the final nail in the coffin.
