SCOTTISH light-welter-weight champion Robert Harkin, from Helensburgh,
is out to prove a point when he tops the bill at the St Andrew's
Sporting Club in Glasgow tonight, for he knows that a convincing win
over Welshman Andy Williams could leave officials of the British Boxing
Board of Control with egg on their faces.
The Board recently decided that Harkin was not good enough to box for
the British title after Midlands promoter Pat Cowdell matched him with
the then champion Lloyd Christie. Instead, veteran Clinton McKenzie was
given the title shot and beat Christie.
MAJOR changes to the European boxing scene are in the pipeline after a
meeting of the European Boxing Union in London on Saturday. A commission
is revising the constitution of the EBU under the chairmanship of Sir
David Hopkin, chairman of the British Boxing Board of Control and the
chief metropolitan magistrate for Greater London.
FRANK BRUNO will not have the referee his manager Terry Lawless had
hoped for in his bout against Mike Tyson in Las Vegas on Saturday. Local
man Richard Steele will control the fight, but if the choice had been
left to Lawless, he would have gone for the more experienced Mills Lane,
who handled Lloyd Honeyghan's recent world-title fight.

We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
