Arsenal could end up paying #2m for 15-year-old winger Jermaine Pennant after having signed him from Notts County to join their football academy of youngsters at Highbury.

Pennant, touted as one of the most exciting young players in English football, came into public perception by playing as a substitute for County in their FA Cup game with Sheffield United last Saturday - the second-youngest player to appear in the competition.

His manager Sam Allardyce revealed that top clubs had made illegal approaches to try to lure the England Schoolboys player - associated with Notts County since the age of 10 - with promises of #5000-a-week wages and luxury gifts to his parents.

However, Arsenal, who have been monitoring the player's progress for months have been exonerated by the second division club's chairman, Derek Pavis.

''Arsenal have acted responsibly throughout,'' he said.
