Attempts by Railtrack to have Parliament remove certain restrictions on the construction and operation of Waverley Station in Edinburgh are being opposed by the city council.

Railtrack has plans for a multi-million pound redevelopment of the site, but requires the amendment of various Acts imposed on the station since it opened in 1844.

One of the restrictions Railtrack wants removed is a limit on the height of the building. It wants to raise the highest level of the roof by two metres; and in some parts by 16m.

At a meeting of the council yesterday, officials recommended that an objection be lodged ''as a precautionary measure''.

They welcomed the redevel-opment, but said it was difficult to assess the full impact of the proposals as specific plans had not been produced.
