COMIC legend Chic Murray has astounded retailers by topping the video sales charts 14 years after his death.

Sales of A World of His Own have shot through the 10,000 mark leaving shops across the country crying out for more copies.

The new video, released before Christmas, comes 60 years after the comic genius first stepped into the spotlight with his off the wall humour.

The bunnet-wearing comic is now vying with another Scottish comic hero, Billy Connolly, to be the top selling entertainment video of the moment.

The success of the video could now see Chic Murray appearing in a follow-up to the hot-selling highlights production.

Ms Dawn Rattray, of Virgin Records in Edinburgh, said: ''Over the Christmas period, it was flying out the door by the bucketload.''

A spokesman for HMV in Edinburgh said: ''Over Christmas, it was absolutely phenomenal which was a bit of a surprise.''

The 45-minute video contains footage of his best lines from his long career and features a heartwarming introduction from Connolly in which he said: ''Chic was by far the funniest man I ever heard and one of the nicest people I ever had the privilege of knowing.''

London-based producer Andy Bates confirmed that a second video was now a possibility.

''The video industry seems to have underestimated Chic's magnetism,'' he said.

''Not a lot of people under 30 know who he is, but latest sales figures indicate that he is something of a sleeping giant.''
