A Rangers fan who sent Ibrox Christmas cards as a wind-up to his Celtic-supporting neighbours returned from holiday to find his front door painted green and white.

One of the cards sent by Mr Jimmy Mackay, 60, showed Santa in Rangers colours using a Celtic supporter's chimney pot as a toilet while uttering ''Ho,ho, ho''.

But when the former rent collector arrived home from Lanzarote he found his front door and gutters painted in Celtic's colours.

His house had also been named ''Parkhead'' in bold letters.

The life-long Rangers fan yesterday said: ''I expected they might try and get revenge while I was away, but I never thought they would go to all that trouble. It was quite a good paint job despite the colour scheme.

''I took it all in good part because for years I have been having good natured banter with my Old Firm rivals. And in any case I think they knew that I was about to replace my old door and rone pipe.

''I reckon it is a 1 -1 draw as far as our rivalry goes.''

He said he suspected that his Celtic-supporting nephew was behind the revenge attack.

As well as being one of the far north's biggest Ranger's fans, Mr Mackay has also played for Rangers - Highland League side Brora Rangers. He was a right back with them in the 1960s, twice breaking his leg playing against Nairn County.
