APPOINTMENTS announced by Scottish Secretary Donald Dewar to the Boards of Trustees of the National Galleries of Scotland, the National Museums of Scotland, and Scottish Arts Council.

Appointed as Trustees of the National Galleries of Scotland for first terms of four years: Mr Gavin Gemmell, of Edinburgh, joint senior partner, Baillie Gifford & Co; deputy chairman, Scottish Widows; and Member of Court, Heriot-Watt University; Mr Sandy Leitch, of London, chief executive, Zurich Financial Services; chairman, Allied Dunbar, Eagle Star, and Threadneedle Asset Management; and chairman, Association of British Insurers; Dr Ian McKenzie Smith OBE, of Aberdeen, formerly city arts and recreation officer, City of Aberdeen; president, Royal Scottish Academy; and member of the Museums and Galleries Commission; Professor Christina Lodder, of Edinburgh, Professor of History of Art at the University of St Andrews, re-appointed for second term.

Appointed to the Board of the National Museums of Scotland for first terms of four years: Ms Christina Macaulay, of Glasgow, deputy commissioning editor, Nations and Regions, Channel 4 Television; Mr Neil McIntosh CBE, of Moffat, former chief executive, Strathclyde Regional Council; chairman, Commission on Local Government and the Scottish Parliament; Deputy Lieutenant of Dumfriesshire; Mr Ian Smith, of New York, chairman and chief executive, Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc.; North American fundraiser for the Museum of Scotland; Lord Wilson of Tillyorn GCMG, of Edinburgh, former Governor of Hong Kong; chairman, Scottish and Southern Energy plc; Mr Sandy Grant Gordon CBE, of Cardross, former chairman of William Grant & Sons Ltd, re-appointed for two years.

Appointed to the Scottish Arts Council for terms of three years: Councillor Elizabeth Cameron, of Glasgow, convener, Arts and Cultural Committee, Glasgow City Council; lecturer in English and Communications; Miss Dale Idiens, of Edinburgh, deputy director (Collections) and Keeper of History and Applied Arts, National Museums of Scotland: Mr John Scott Moncrieff, of Edinburgh, partner, Murray Beith Murray WS; chairman, Traverse Theatre; founding chairman, Cheek by Jowl Theatre Company.
