Glasgow Sports Division have pulled off a tremendous coup by signing former Australian Olympic player Bronwyn Marshall who has joined the city's growing international brigade.

Marshall will make her debut against City of Edinburgh Kool Kats in the Scottish Women's League at Portobello High School today and should give the Glasgow side a great chance of avenging their

narrow home defeat at the hands of their capital rivals earlier in the season.

A 6ft 2in centre who played for Australia in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Marshall, now 34, has only recently arrived in Scotland and decided to join the Glasgow club after reading about them in this column.

Her arrival means that Glasgow will have to rotate their international players as they already have an American (Lee Souter), an Irish international (Geraldine Innes), and a Bosnian (Slavica Zeelenovic).

''She's already made quite a difference at training which is so much better for Slavica now having a big player to work with,'' said Geraldine Innes, who is also a Glasgow Development Officer and must be delighted that a player of this calibre has come to live in Glasgow and wants to get involved.

It also means that Glasgow, with their twin towers - two six foot plus centres - will have an even better chance of picking up one of the top honours this season.

St Mirren are another West side with their eyes on trophies after a 65-62 overtime win over the champions Midlothian Bulls at Lasswade in midweek.

Height was a big factor in this win too with the Saints' twin towers Scott Devine with 21 and Stuart McKay doing the most damage.

Bulls have now lost three times in the league and their chances of bagging an eleventh title in a row are slipping with Glasgow still on only one defeat.

Saints, who are also on three league defeats, may be a better bet for the Scottish Cup.

Edinburgh Rocks meanwhile are not looking a good bet for anything except rock-bottom and face a resurgent Chester Jets in the Budweiser League at Meadowbank tonight before the Sky TV cameras.

This would be a great time to pull of their first home win but judging by the way they collapsed after leading Birmingham by 11 points at half-time last Sunday even their owners are not holding their breath.
