SWIMMING

DERYK Snelling, head coach of the Canadian Olympic squad four times since 1972, has been appointed as the Amateur Swimming Federation of Great Britain's first national performance director.

The 62-year-old Englishman - born in Darwen, Lancashire - is a former British inter-nationalist and coach at Southampton Swimming Club.

He began coaching in Canada in 1967 and has helped Canadian competitors win 19 Olympic and 10 world cham-pionship medals over the past two decades.

Snelling's four-year contract marks the end of a long search following Britain's poor performance at the 1992 Olympics. His duties will include producing a national team development strategy, devising plans to support the final preparation of swimmers leading to major events and formulating the selection policy, and planning the British team's competitive calendar.

ASFGB chief executive David Sparkes said: ``Deryk is one of the top coaches in the world and we are delighted that he has accepted this key role.

``Our goal is Sydney 2000 and the Commonwealth Games in 2002, where we know, with Deryk's experience and skill, we will be among the medal winners.''
