WHILE Mackintosh-mania sweeps Glasgow, too many people forget that the city boasts another world-class architect. Alexander `Greek' Thomson. As with Charles Rennie Mackintosh, many of Thomson's works were neglected in his own city and fell into disrepair.

Fortunately, attitudes have changed - thanks to the work of people like Gavin Stamp at the School of Art - and the city still retains many of Thomson's works including Great Western Terrace, St Vincent Street Church and the derelict remains of Caledonian Road Church. Much needs to be done to restore these to their former glory, but at least the climate appears to be changing.

It can only be a matter of time before Thomson is as well known to Glaswegians as Mackintosh. So we should brace ourselves for the inevitable kitsch-Thomson baubles which will flood into the gifte shoppes when the great man is put back on his proper pedestal. There is a price to pay for everything.

In the meantime, we must be grateful for what has been saved.

It is very rare for Greek Thomson homes to come onto the market. The restoration of one of the townhouses on Great Western Terrace a couple of years ago attracted worldwide attention.

While no-one would claim that the house at 202 Nithsdale Road, above, was Thomson's finest, it is nevertheless an interesting example and many original features have been retained after a recent refurbishment.

Built in 1870 as part of St Ronan's Preparatory School, it is close to several outstanding homes by Thomson in the neighbourhood, including the fine symmetrical villa called Ellisland at 200 Nithsdale Road.

No. 202 Nithsdale Road contains four impressive public rooms on the ground floor, all of which face south. On the north side the family room has patio doors to the rear garden. Upstairs there are four bedrooms, with en-suite bathroom off the main bedroom. There is also a study and dressing room on the upper floor.

Number 202 Nithsdale Road comes with a granny flat which connects to the main house. The mature gardens have wrought iron gates and contain many trees and bushes as well as an extensive lawn.
