DANNY Sapsford is the only British player to reach the semi-finals of the LTA men's indoor satellite tournament at Eastbourne. Sapsford, the world No.192, beat American Scott Humphries 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. Today, the Surrey player faces qualifier Ville Liukko of Finland, who beat Middlesex's Luke Milligan 7-6, 7-5.
Orlin Stanoytchev beat Swiss Ivo Hueberger 7-5, 6-1. The Bulgarian now meets America's Doug Flach, who beat Maurice Ruah, of Venezuela, 6-3, 6-1.
JANA Novotna ended Jennifer Capriati's comeback when she beat the American in three sets in the quarter-finals of the #300,000 WTA tournament in Essen yesterday. The No.4 seed won 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 6-3 to set up a semi-final clash with home favourite Anke Huber.
JAPAN'S Haruka Inoue beat seventh seed Sandra Wachtershauser, of Germany, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 to reach the final of the LTA Women's Challenger in Redbridge, Essex, yesterday.
Inoue, who knocked out top seed Laura Golarsa in the first round, faces second seed Elena Wagner, of Germany, who saved a match point at 5-3 down in the final set to beat Olga Barabanschikova, of Belarus, 6-0, 1-6, 7-5.
OLYMPIC champion Marc Rosset was bundled out of the European Community Championship in Antwerp by Ukrainian Andrei Medvedev yesterday.
Eighth seed Rosset, who injured a hand when he punched an advertising panel last month, double-faulted on match-point to lose 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.
BRITISH trio Sam Smith, Megan Miller, and Karen Cross have been granted wild cards for the Texaco Women's Challenger tournament, which starts at Eastleigh on Tuesday.
Badminton
SCOTLAND'S Anne Gibson will almost certainly become the first Scot to represent Britain in badminton at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 after she disposed of Denmark's Lotte Thomson 6-11, 11-6, 11-3 in their singles clash in the semi-finals rounds of the Uber Cup in Prague yesterday.
The London-based Scot has now strengthened her already promising Olympic position by defeating one of the world's top 30 players, with final selection for the Atlanta team just one month away. However, Gibson's point was the only one Scotland managed to capture in their 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Danes.
Athletics
ONE of the first Edinburgh athletic development group projects gets underway on Sunday - a breakfast-brunch bunch run (of any length up to two hours, start 10am), changing and showering at Marcos, in Grove Street, and meeting there afterwards. All are welcome.

Judo
SCOTLAND'S top players Graeme Randall (Edinburgh) and Joyce Heron (Rosyth) are keeping up their exhausting schedule of open tournaments in pursuit of Olympic selection points by heading off to the German Masters tournament in Munich this weekend.
Randall won a bronze in the under-78 kilo class in the Austrian A tournament in Linz last weekend while Heron was fifth in the under-48 kilo class. Munich will be the Fife mother's fourth appearance out of five ranking tournaments.
The European championships in Holland in May will be the final decider for British team selection for Atlanta.
Olympic selection has become much more difficult with players having to compete in 10 ranking tournaments with the best three results counting. Those in the top eight in Europe will go to Atlanta. Positions in the last world championships will also count.
Volleyball
MCA Cardinals have an injury to a mystery player for today's Royal Bank Scottish Women's Cup semi-final against Clydevalley. Coach Vince Krawczyk refused to name the player involved but she is causing some concern.
Cardinals are aiming for their seventh Scottish Cup final in a row and are making their tenth successive semi-final appearance. Holders Rucanor Jets take on News Ayrshire Kyle in the other semi-final.
In the men's cup, holders City of Glasgow Ragazzi, who have already won the league, face Bellshill Cardinals in the semi-finals and, if they win, will meet the winners of the Dundee v Rucanor Jets tie in next month's final.
Motorsport
WORLD champion Michael Schumacher finally got to test his new Ferrari F310 at Estoril yesterday - only to grind to a halt with electrical problems after just two bends. The car was towed back to the pit lane and pushed back into the Ferrari garage by disgruntled mechanics.
Schumacher went out again in the car later in the day and appeared to have no immediate problems. With just over two weeks to go before the start of the 1996 season, recurring technical problems with the new Ferrari have been disappointing for the German.
Squash
MARTIN Heath (David Lloyd Centre), the No.1 seed, needed only 23 minutes to beat the host club's Kevin Milne 9-1, 9-1, 9-2 in last night's first round of the Mr Chips North Open in Aberdeen.
Internationalist Stuart Cowie, the Norfolk-based Scot, showed no ill-effects of the broken finger that kept him out of this season's Scottish championships in a 9-2, 9-1, 9-2 victory over Craig Thomson (Aberdeen).
In the women's event, former internationalist Julie Nicol, sister of world No.4, Peter, returned after a long break from tournaments to reach the quarter-finals 9-2, 9-0, 9-0 against Aberdeen club-mate Elizabeth Robertson.
