THE former historian, A Rodger Waterston, Keeper Emeritus, National History, at the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh, has died at his home.

He worked at the department from 1935 to 1974, his career broken by Army service. Serv-ing in the Middle East, and based in Cairo and Cyprus, he was seconded to the Foreign Office during the post-war years.

He wrote extensively on his subject, much of his material published overseas, and was regarded as an eminent and knowledgable scholar by his colleagues. Holder of a BSc de-gree, he was awarded the OBE.

He is survived by his wife, Marie, daughter, Susan, and one granddaughter.
