CROSS-Channel hovercraft travel ended last night as the vessel Princess Margaret made its final journey from Calais to Dover. Operating company Hoverspeed announced in July that Princess Margaret and her sister craft Princess Anne would, reluctantly, be taken out of service.

Competition from the Channel Tunnel, a new breed of superferries and passengers' demands for more luxury all contributed to the decision.

Minister has golden farewell

Glasgow-born the Rev James Reid yesterday celebrated 50 years as a minister in the city where he began his career.

His golden jubilee was celebrated in St Matthew's church in Yoker, far from his current home in Perth, Western Australia, where he now lives with his wife, Coral. Mr Reid, 80, said: ''It has been a wonderful experience being a minister, but I am now ready to ease off a bit.'' He will still act as a locum if required.

aNewsnight to stay says Beeb

BBC Scotland last night dismissed reports that the Scottish opt-out from Newsnight is to be scrapped.

It followed reports that a decision had been made in London to end the Newsnight Scotland programme, which has had mixed reviews. A spokeswoman for BBC Scotland said: ''The article is wrong. No such decision would be made without the full involvement of BBC Scotland.''
