Athletics

Scottish international hill runner, Alan Miligan (Fife AC) broke the existing course record when he won the Innerleithen Three and A Half Mile Hill Race in 22:14. Jamie McDonald (Central AC) finished runner-up ahead of Euan Jardine (Fife) with Neil Baush (Ilkley) winning the Veterans' prize.

Isabel Knox (Hunters Bogg Trotters) won the women's hill race as well as the 800m 'Round The Town' Road Race with Bill Stanage (Innerleithen) winning the men's race from David Barbour (Walkerburn).

Brian Doyle (Cumbernauld AAC) recorded a sprint double, winning the Scottish 80m Grass Track Sprint Championship in 9.09 secs. He also won the British 200m Championship in 22.68 secs on a bumpy grass track with Lee Notman from Hawick finishing runner-up on each occasion.

Alastair Dunlop won three gold medals, two middle distance wins and a relay win, at the European Veteran Championships at Jyuaskyla in Finland.

Dunlop won the M45 1500m title in 4:16.18, added the 800m title the following day and was in the British team which won the 4 x 400m relay. John Ross (City of Edinburgh) won the M60 800m title. Esther Linaker (Pitreavie), already winner of the W55 100m gold medal, just missed out on a sprint double win when finishing a close up second in the 200m final.

Claire Cameron, (City of Glasgow AC) won her third medal of the championship when finishing third in the W40 Weight Pentathlon with a score of 3069 points.

Gary Hagan, was the outstanding competitor in the Scottish team at the Siab British Home Countries International Park, at Stanley Park, Blackpool where Scots athletes won 19 medals in the face of tough competition.

Hagan won Scotland's only gold medal in the Discus, with a throw of 49.94m and also won a bronze medal in the Shot (14.09m). Frances Miller (Elgin) finished second in the Shot (11.08m), Jill Lando (Motherwell) set a personal best of 2-10.70 for second place in a closely contested 800m race and the Scottish Boys relay teams had excellent performances for second places behind England in both the 4 x 100m (44.16) and 4 x 400m (3.28.07). Golf

Californian Loren Roberts won the PGA Greater Milwaukee Open last night with a record score for the 32-year-old event.

The 45-year-old American fired a five-under-par 66 for a four-round total of 260 (24 under par) on the par-71 Brown Deer Park Golf Club. The win ended a 14-month drought for Roberts, who turned a two-shot overnight lead into an eight-stroke victory over fellow countryman Franklin Langham.

Colchester's Paul Curry shot a one-under-par final round of 70 to finish tied for 22nd place on 275. Scores (USA unless stated, Par 71):

Sweden's Annika Sorenstam continued her blazing form, winning the LPGA Big Apple Classic by one stroke to move past Karrie Webb of Australia into first place on the prize money list.

Sorenstam won for the third time in five weeks firing a one-over par 72 in the final round of the rain-shortened event to finish at seven-under par 205 for 54 holes. American Rosie Jones finished second after a final-round 72 with Allison Finney, the leader by a stroke over Sorenstam when the day began, third on 207 after a final-round 75.

A Scottish Ladies Golf Association Select overpowered a Scottish Veterans' LGA squad yesterday at Nairn Dunbar, where the over-50s team will return for the Veteran Ladies Golf Association annual team championship next month.

The SLGA Select won 11-1 although the veterans did better in the singles than they did in the foursomes. All the matches were played out to the eighteenth green.

Alastair Gunn from Halkirk won the SGA World Heavyweight Throwing Contest at Loch Lomond Highland Games in an exciting, closely contested event. Gunn scored maximum points in the 22 lb. Scots Hammer and the 22 lb. shotputt to win with 35.5 points from defending champion, Matt Sandford (Australia) who totalled 31 points in his first competition of the summer on arriving in Scotland.

Former champion, Francis Brebner, (Peterhead) was a close-up third with 30.5 points ahead of Texan thrower, John Palman (USA) 27.5 points. Individual Event Winners: 22 lb Shot: A. Scotland's under-21 team preparing for the inaugural World Youth Cup in Cardiff, won three warm-up games and lost one at Sussex University, Brighton over the weekend.

Tug of War

The Loch Lomond Millennium Tug of War event resulted in one of the most enthralling and closely contested competitions ever seen.

In the final, between Elgin and East Lothian, the teams engaged in a pull lasting a record 15 minutes and in the third and final pull, the rope broke. The competing teams collapsed in a heap with the East Lothian anchorman, at the bottom of the pile, injuring his neck but recovering to take part in the final pull which was held again, utilising the reserve rope.
