Judo
Scottish fighters won eight medals at the Commonwealth championships in Stephenville, Canada with pride of place going to Donna Robertson's victory in the 44kg class.
Robertson came down in weight to win gold, but the 44kg category will sadly not be contested at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Twin sister Fiona also went home with a medal, finishing third one weight up, while Andrew Knott, Euan Burton, Karen Cusack and Scottish Open champion Sarah Clark also took bronze.
Stephen Vidler and Jenny Brien went one better to claim silver, with Brien unlucky to lose to a Canadian in the final of the 57kg event. Scotland's impressive medal tally placed them third behind England and Canada in the medals table.
Boxing
SCOTTISH Amateur Boxing champions welterweight Colin McNeill of Fauldhouse and Fife light-welterweight Kevin Anderson of Denbeath flew out to Henneth near Cologne in Germany yesterday to join the Olympic squads of Germany, England, France, the Ukraine and Turkey for special training in fighting in the European style.
McNeill and Anderson both aim to perfect their ring techniques to maximise punch scoring based on the European system of computer ringside judging.
Orienteering
Russian Valentin Nobikov, who missed out on last year's world championships because the Russian team could not afford the trip to Britain, completed a Euroepan Championship double at Truskavets in the Ukraine yesterday adding the short distance title to his classic distance success from Monday.
Nobikov finished over 1 minute clear of Glasgow Parks Tour winner Yuri Omeltchenko (Ukraine) with a time of 26m58s.

Cricket
WesT Lothian's superb form in June has seen them named as winners of the Famous Grouse Team of the Month award. The Linlithgow-based club won three and drew one of four league matches on their way to topping the Premier Division and also won two Scottish Cup ties.
Golf
Defending champion Laura McLardy's hopes of retaining the North of Scotland Championship were dashed at Glenisla yesterday. The Duff House Royal golfer lost to Edzell's Sue McGregor 3 and 2 in the first round of the Gifford Trophy match play.
McGregor's rich vein of form continued when she saw off the challenge of Claire Hunter at the twentieth hole. The leading qualifier for yesterday's match play, Dawn Dewar, was beaten at the twenty-second by Claire Meir.

Midlothian suffered a damaging defeat on the first day of the SLGA East Division Inter County Championship at Murrayfield yesterday.
The hosts went down 61/2 to 21/2 against Stirling and Clackmannanshire in the opening round of qualifying matches for the County Finals at Alyth, Perthshire, in September. In the other game, East Lothian had a resounding victory over Fife, losing just one match in their foursome and single encounters to win by 8 points to 1.
