golf round-up

TWO Scottish golfers led after two rounds in the Welsh Womens' Open Amateur Strokeplay Golf Championship at Ashburnham at the weekend - but not where it really mattered, at the finishing line.

Cardross' Claire Hargan was the pace-maker after the first 18 holes but was overtaken by Bridge of Allan's Heather Stirling during the second 18 holes - and Stirling went into the final round yesterday two strokes clear of the pack.

However, both Stirling and Hargan struggled in the West Wales wind and fell down the field, with Scotland surrendering a five-stroke advantage in the Nations Cup to lose out to an English charge.

As it was, the title went to

21-year-old Rebecca Prout of Betchworth Park in Surrey, who kept her composure to return a one-over-par 76, for a total of 228, which included a birdie 4 at the last, good enough for a two-stroke victory over Australian Melanie Holmes-Smith. Stirling finished sixth on 234, while Hargan ended up thirteenth with 239.

Last year's winner, Anne Walker, from Strathaven,

finished with a nightmare 256.
