STRUGGLING Partick Thistle Football Club may have found a new ''heavyweight'' financial backer - in the unlikely form of veteran ska singer Buster Bloodvessel, writes Andy Drought.

The roly-poly frontman of Eighties group Bad Manners revealed yesterday that he had approached the second division Glasgow club with an offer to sponsor them.

And while officials at the club yesterday played down the significance of the move, they said they would be interested in talking to the musician.

He contacted Partick Thistle a few weeks ago after hearing about their financial plight.

He said yesterday: ''I like non-league football and I like the underdog, and because people in Scotland take the mickey out of them, I thought they were the right club to get involved with.

''I'm hoping to meet with the club early next year, and then we'll get everything sorted out.''

Thistle chief executive Alan Dick yesterday said: ''It's very, very premature, but yes, if he wants to contact us we would be delighted to talk to him.''

Bloodvessel, whose real name is Douglas Trendle, also sponsors Dr Martens league team Margate FC. He has occasionally been known to perform his songs before the club's matches.
