A MAN who served 14 years for the murder of an elderly widow was yesterday freed by the Court of Appeal. Trevor Campbell, now 35, sentenced to life imprisonment, was alleged to have committed the crime with his girlfriend Christine Sawbridge, 15 at the time of the stabbing of Ethel Cawood, 84, and who was sentenced to be detained during Her Majesty's pleasure.

In London, Lord Bingham ruled his conviction ''unsafe''. Campbell said his confession was made after he was threatened by members of the West Midlands Serious Crime Squad.
