ARBROATH are on the brink of losing the 115-year-old scoring record which has made them famous the world over.

Their 36-0 Scottish Cup win over Bon Accord in 1885 gave them the accolade of the team to score the most goals in any senior football match. However, experts at the Guinness Book of Records are currently investigating a score which could snatch the title away.

Romanian side Carpati Mirsa defeated Avintul Dirlos by an incredible 41-0 in a recent league match and could be set to take over Arbroath's mantle.

''Ginge'' Shaw, chairman of the 36-0 Club, questioned the validity of the Romanian result.

He said: ''At the moment, the Guinness Book of Records are certifying the result and that should take about eight weeks.

''They are making sure that everything was legal and above board and we're keeping our fingers crossed that they find something untoward.

''For them to score 41 goals, they would have to score one about every two minutes - there must be something about an under-strength league or something.

''When Arbroath scored their 36 goals, they were beating teams 18-0 and 14-0, and were one of the better teams around. Football had just started then, but with today's football and the way teams are more defensive, it's a bit strange. The defence must have had an off-day.''
