Scotland's Simon Pride finished sixth in the World 100km Road-Running Champion-ships in Japan yesterday. Russia's Grigori Murzine won in 6hr 30min 06sec with Pride completing in 6-59.38. Another Scot, William Sichel, was twenty-second in 7-46.26. The Orkney-based veteran was also first in the Over-45 age division. Britain's Caroline Hunter-Rowe won the women's title in 8-16.07.

CAMMY SPENCE (Inverclyde AC) was elected president of the Scottish Veteran Harriers Club at its annual general meeting in Coatbridge. The new vice president is Willie Drysdale (Law & District) and treasurer is Betty Steedman (AC Musselburgh).

CITY of Glasgow finished eighth in the European Clubs Road Race Championships at Casino, Italy, yesterday. Lynn MacDougall finished twelfth in 53min 57sec with Sandra Branney twenty-first (55-29); Ann McPhail twenty-sixth (56-46), and Carol-Ann Thompson thirty-sixth (58-27). The championship was won by Lucha, of Moscow.

Boxing

Edinburgh business executive Myra Peck, 20, and St Andrews-based assistant bakery manager Sheree Anderson, 25, are poised to become the first two native Scotswomen to clash in a licenced ring bout in Scotland.

The pair have been matched to top the bill at the Edinburgh Sparta Club's annual winter wine and dine boxing show at Edinburgh's Prestonfield House Hotel on November 27.

Eighteen-year-old Ayrshire-based amateur welterweight Colin Anderson, of the Irvine Valley Club, defeated Welsh opponent Steve Barron in the first round to help a Scottish Amateur Boxing Association squad beat a Welsh team 5-3 at Bridgend, Glamorgan.

Cambuslang-based 11-year-old light-flyweight Brian Murray also had a winning international debut by outpointing Welshman Luke Knowles.

Cycling

DENNY Devlin and Dave Henderson of Hawick CC won the 12.5 mile St Christophers CC vet and pacer Tour de Gentlemen event at Blair Drummond by a second in a time of 29min 5sec.

Second were the pre-race favourites, Glasgow Couriers pair Dave Millar and Campbell Baird and third, Bill Matthews and Freddy Wells of West Highland Wheelers. Their time was 30-15. The oldest rider in the field, 76-year-old Jacky Barbour and his Royal Albert club-mate, Alan Mooney, completed the course in 36-54.

THIS season's junior Scotland side will be announced following the junior district tournament (final trial) featuring East, Midlands and Rest of Scotland at St George's, Edinburgh on November 29, the trialists including several junior Scotland A & B players.

Orienteering

Scottish representatives Edinburgh Interlopers lost out in the final of the Compass Sport

Trophy at Hexham yesterday to Harrogate Claro.

In the semi-finals of the British Small Clubs Knockout Championship, Interlopers were easy winners over Essex Stragglers by 35-25 but title holders Claro won the day by a narrow 32-28 margin. It gave Yorkshire a Compass Sport double as Sheffield's South Yorkshire OC won the Compass Sport Cup in the large clubs competition beating Nottingham by 69-62.

Sailing

WITH the penultimate race in the Kip Marina autumn series completed yesterday off Inverkip, Charles Frize in the 1720 Cork 1 design Big L and Brian McLean must be favourites to lift the principal trophy next Sunday.

Frize won yesterday's blustery race for Class 1 by a comfortable eight minutes, seeing off newcomer to the 1720, Alex Duffus, who retired with a torn spinnaker in the strong winds.

McLean, sailing Aggro II, had won all his races until yesterday but finished third in Class 3. Results:

Alex Popp of Germany had his hardest match of the week but still took less than an hour to beat his fellow 21-year-old compatriot Markus Menzler to make it three wins in a row in the fourth and last week of the men's LTA $15,000 Futures series at the Craiglockhart Tennis Centre, Edinburgh yesterday.

Popp, unseeded but playing as if in the World top 100 as opponent Scottish No.2 Ross Mathieson said earlier in the week, beat sixth seed Menzler 6-2, 6-3 in the final to win $1950 and will now be in the top 500 officially this morning. He only missed the first week when he had a car crash on the way from Heidelberg to Sunderland.

Unseeded British pairing James Davidson (Bucks) and David Sherwood (Yorks) failed to produce their win of two weeks ago in Glasgow when they were beaten in the doubles final on Saturday.

Davidson, 25, and Sherwood, 18, son of former Olympic athlete Alan, went down to scratch pair Ashley Naumann of Australia and Andrew Rueb (USA) 6-3, 6-2.

Naumann, 28, from Queensland and Rueb, 25 from Cleveland, Ohio, the fourth seeds, took $450 each after putting out second seeds Nick Gould (Avon) and Tom Spinks (Norfolk) 6-4, 6-1 in the semi-final earlier in the day. Results:

Weightlifting

Edinburgh University fresher Mark Middleton from London at the 62Kg lowest weight was the only new winner in the Scottish Eastern District Championships weightlifting at Meadowmill SC, Prestonpans on Saturday.

All five other titles were regained at the new increased international weight limits including the 105Kg by Commonwealth Games and Scotland's only Olympic squad lifter Stuart Yule, 22, with a total of 240Kg. Results:
