Rangers midfielder Rino Gattuso yesterday revealed that he rejected a summer approach from Juventus to stay at Ibrox.
The Italian Under-21 intern-ationalist claims he rejected a potential move to the Serie A outfit because he feels settled in Scotland. Speaking in Rangers News, Gattuso pledged to remain at Ibrox for the immediate future, but he hinted that there is the prospect he might reconsider if first-team football eludes him under new manager Dick Advocaat.
Gattuso said: ''It is true that Juventus wanted me to sign for them, but I have no intention of leaving Rangers. Juventus are the biggest club in Europe, but I have another three years left on my contract and Rangers are easily big enough for me.
''I am only 20 and playing for a great team, so there is no need for me to move on just now. But this is an important year for me, and it is important I remain here and try to keep my place for Rangers.
''I want to play every week, and it would be no good for me not to play regularly.'' Gattuso added that he has no plans to adapt his combative style after collecting one red and 13 yellow cards last term.
qTOMMY McLean has not closed the door on a return to the Dundee United first-team for Robbie Winters, despite being impressed by the form of the three strikers who have scored on their pre-season trip to Holland.
Swede Kjell Olofsson scored twice in three games and new French signing Roger Boli opened his account to suggest they could be developing a dangerous partnership, while 19-year-old Steven Thompson also scored to stake his claim. However, McLean said that the transfer-listed Winters, who was not taken to Holland but scored in a closed-door match with Arbroath, could come back into his thinking if he returned to form.
McLean also confirmed his interest in Boli's former Walsall team-mate and fellow Frenchman, Jean Francois Peron, but wants to see the midfielder in action.
qDUNFERMLINE Athletic manager Bert Paton has major injury problems, with six players doubtful for their opening Premier League match of the season against Celtic.
The East End Park side, currently training at Largs, have sent home Marc Millar (twisted ankle), Ivo Den Bieman (knee injury), and new signing Derek Ferguson (groin strain) for treatment, while Gerry Britton, John Fraser, and Stewart Petrie all have knocks.
qAFTER an embarrassingly slow start, Aberdeen fans have started a rush to buy season tickets.
Almost 6000 have now been sold, compared to just 1500 up to the beginning of the month.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
