GERMAN libero Matthias Sammer has had a quick change of heart following his latest injury blow, which had made him contemplate giving up football.

Paul Lambert's team-mate with European Cup winners Borussia Dortmund was yesterday encouraged by the words of national manager Berti Vogts. The 30-year-old had cartilage damage to his left knee repaired in August but now needs another operation, forcing him to miss Germany's final World Cup qualifier against Albania today.

The coach, who replaced him with Olaf Thon for the match from which Germany need only a draw to qualify ahead of Ukraine and Portungal, said: ''The door will always be open for Matthias. He is clearly No.1 at his position in Germany and even in Europe.''

The operation will be the fourth on Sammer's knee in an injury-hit career.
