JIM Love, Scotland's director of cricket, and Mike Gilbert, coach of the national women's hockey squad, upstaged international football team manager Craig Brown last night when they received two of the major honours in the Scottish Coach of the Year awards ceremony at Gleneagles.

Steering the national sides to the finals of their respective world cups gained Love the professional coach award and Gilbert the male coach honour.

Nominations can be made by clubs, officials, or members of the public, via governing bodies. Neither Brown, who steered Scotland to the World Cup finals of France 98, nor rugby coach Richie Dixon, on the back foot after national XV results, was nominated.

Special awards were made to Jim Telfer and Ian McGeechan, recognising the Lions' success, and to City of Glasgow veteran coach Jimmy Campbell, for service to athletics. Other awards:

Female coach: Moira McBeath (athletics, Thurso); Male coach (juniors): Robert Inglis (Inverness, judo); Community coach: John Grant (Dundee, basketball); Coaching and coach education (jointly): Martin Blacklaws (Perth, volleyball) and Tom Hepburn (Glasgow, badminton).

The Scottish Sports Council organises the event on behalf of the National Association of Sports Coaches with support from the London Stock Exchange, stockbrokers in Scotland, and Coachwise.
