Volleyball

IAIN Grubb led City of Glasgow Ragazzi to their fifth successive league and cup double after a five-set win over Rucanor Jets in the cup final at Meadowbank yesterday.

Grubb had not trained in the weeks preceding the final but played a vital role in holding off a superb Jets challenge, especially in a tense fifth set, which he finished with a powerful smash as Ragazzi won 10-15, 15-4, 15-7, 11-15, 15-12.

After winning the first set, largely through the power of John Gaughan and Bryan Banks, Jets seemed to lose their concentration and lost the next two sets while posing little challenge. They rediscovered their form to win the fourth and force a deciding fifth set.

Jets looked on course to create a major upset as they built a 9-5 lead in the final set, but Glasgow hit back, finally took the lead at 13-12, and closed Jets out.

In the women's final, Coors Hazlehead edged out Troon in another five-set final. Troon, the first Division Three side to appear in the final, recovered from the loss of the first set to take a 2-1 lead with Jenny Ellis and Christine Low in outstanding form.

The more experienced Aberdeen side hit back, however, to win 15-4, 9-15, 13-15, 15-11, 15-7 and lift the cup for the first time.

Rugby

THE Adrossan Accies Sevens are not usually noted for setting the rugby world alight, but Saturday winners Kilmarnock created their own little piece of history by not giving up a single point on their way to winning the trophy.

Kilmarnock opened the competition by defeating Greenock Wanderers 24-0 and proceeded to beat Paisley 49-0, Garnock 17-0 and then Cumnock 55-0 in the final. This meant Killie had scored 145 points whilst conceding none.

A spokesman for Adrossan said: ''I can't recall anything like this ever happening here. Indeed, I don't think this has ever happened at any of the major sevens in recent memory.''

Motorsport

ABERDEEN'S Brian Lyall stamped his authority on the Scottish Championship when he stormed to victory in his home event, the Granite City Rally, to make it three wins out of three in this year's title race.

The Subaru Impreza driver dominated the international field in the two-day event, joint counter in the Scottish and Mintex National Championships, to win by 75 seconds from fellow Aberdonian Sandy Dalgarno (Ford Escort Cosworth).

Dalgarno, who celebrated his 49th birthday yesterday received an early gift when he capitalised on the misfortune of Andy Horne (Inverness), whose Metro 6R4 ground to a halt with gearbox problems within sight of the end of the final stage.

Lyall's win not only extends his lead in the Scottish Championship over Dalgarno, but also opens his account in the Mintex after he failed to complete the opening round in Bournemouth last month. Results:

Granite City Rally: Aberdeen (Scottish Championship 3rd round, Mintex National Championship, 2nd round) - 1, B Lyall, J Bennie (Aberdeen, Subaru Impreza) 1-15-26; 2, S Dalgarno/M Forrest (Dyce, Ford Escort Cosworth) 1-16-41; 3, N Dougan/A Cook (Ayr, Ford Escort Cosworth) 1-16-50; 4, M Grierson/S Merry (Dalbeattie, Subaru impreza) 1-16-52; 5, J Burn/S Quirk (Hamilton, Metro 6R4) 1-17-11; 6, P Vassallo/R Pullen (Hexham, Subaru Impreza) 1-17-34; 7, S Hill/J Rabbett (Oxford, Mitsubishi Lancer) 1-17-38; 8, J McRae/C Paterson (Lanark, Porsche Carrera) 1-17-53; 9, C Birkbeck/M Corner (Saltburn, Ford Escort Cosworth) 1-18-36; 10. S Smith/J Kitson (Northallerton, Lancia Delta Integrale) 1-19-13.

q COLIN McRae sets out to get his World Rally Championship bid back on track in Spain today knowing the problems which forced his Subara Impreza to grind to an embarrassing halt in Portugal a fortnight ago has been identified.

McRae starts the three-day tarmac event as favourite, a position strengthened after his engineers identified the problem over the weekend which forced the Impreza's timing belt to skip a tooth during a gear change in Portugal. Perhaps a more significant boost came when they also exonerated him of any blame.

McRae's biggest Spanish problem over the 1357km and 18 special stages, is again likely to come from Liatti, winner earlier this year in Monte Carlo, as well as the resurgent Tommi Makinen. The defending world champion won in Portugal to open up a five-point gap over the Scot, but McRae is only too aware how fickle the Finn's lead is.
