Celtic have confirmed that they have agreed to sign Norwegian striker Harald Brattbakk from Rosenborg for a fee of around #2m. The player will arrive at Celtic Park on Thursday after he plays in his club's final match of the qualifying stage of the Champions' League against Olympiakos in Athens the preceding evening.

''I am pleased that Harald has agreed to join Celtic,'' chief executive Fergus McCann said on a day of announcements at Parkhead.

''Terms have been agreed for a four-and-a-half year contract and he has signed a pre-contract agreement. His scoring record speaks for itself, 127 goals in 148 domestic games for his club and 14 in 32 European matches.''

Celtic have been trying to sign a player like Brattbakk for some months and head coach Wim Jansen was also clearly pleased by this latest piece of business.

''He is coming here as a proven goalscorer, something we have been looking for, for some time,'' Jansen said. ''I think he will complement and complete our style of play and I hope he does for us what he did for Rosenborg.''

Jansen is unlikely to plunge Brattbakk straight into his team to meet Hearts next week, but he should appear at some stage.

Brattbakk's signing is likely to bring to an end Celtic's spending in the short term.

McCann also took the opportunity yesterday to confirm that work has started to complete the Celtic end of the stadium and that he intends to leave the club and sell the majority of his shares in the summer of 1999.
