A MAJOR investigation has been launched into allegations that young boys were sexually abused while in a council-run children's home in Fife.

It is understood the claims, some of which date back 20 years, have been made against a past member of staff who worked at the former St Margaret's House children's home, in Williamsburgh, Elie.

Fife Police yesterday confirmed officers are currently investigating allegations of abuse, but refused to reveal the nature of the accusations or any further details about the inquiry, which is thought to have been launched at least a week ago.

A police spokesman admitted they were ''actively'' looking for former residents of the home, thought to have been in their early teens when the alleged assaults took place.

The inquiry is being co-ordinated from Glenrothes police station and a team of social workers will be available to help former residents who come forward to face the ordeal of reliving their experiences.

All the allegations relate to the early 1970s, when the home was run by the former Fife County Council for children as young as nine with personal and family problems, catering for as many as 12 boys and 12 girls at a time.

Many of the residents of the home are now in their late 30s or early 40s and some of the alleged victims are thought to be married with children. Police believe the man at the centre of the claims is still alive.

The police spokesman said officers were ''carrying out investigations into allegations of abuse at St Margaret's House, Elie, some of which may date back more than 20 years.

He added: ''We are actively looking for former residents. Anyone who was a resident of the home who may have information which would help us with our inquiries is asked to contact our incident room at Glenrothes police station on 01592 418600.''

Mr Mike Sawyer, head of social work at Fife Council, described the claims as ''serious'', adding: ''The allegations surrounding the former children's home have only recently been brought to our attention, but we have moved quickly to assist the police in thoroughly investigating the matter.

''We appreciate that for anyone who may have lived at St Margaret's House recalling events from so long ago may be difficult. For others it may be a very painful experience.

'However, we would ask people to come forward with any information they feel may help our investigations.''
