JIM White, the Sky Sports presenter, was banned from driving for a year and fined pounds-750 yesterday after admitting a charge of refusing to take a breathalyser test.

The 47-year-old football pundit was stopped by police while driving in Church Street, Glasgow, on June 2 last year.

When taken to a police station in Partick, he told officers:

"I'm providing f****** zero."

White, of Hughenden Gardens, Hyndland, Glasgow, had been asked to provide two breath specimens to determine his ability to drive.

His lawyer, Ken Waddell, told Glasgow District Court:

"He did have certain reasons for not providing a sample of breath, but these do not amount in law to a reasonable excuse.

"He has expressed remorse for being here today and for being involved with the police."

White's pleas of not guilty to driving while unfit through drink or drugs and failing to give a roadside breath test were accepted by the Crown.

Adele McDonald, depute fiscal, who told stipendiary magistrate Robert Hamilton that there was a schedule of previous convictions relating to the presenter, added: "The police had reason to stop the accused and take him to Partick police station. He refused to provide specimens and said: 'I'm providing f****** zero'."

White, who is reputed to earn pounds-150,000 a year from Sky, was ordered to pay his fine within a month.

He declined to comment as he left court. His employers refused to comment when asked if the conviction would affect his future with Sky.

At the time of his arrest last year, White spent a night in custody before appearing in court. At that time he denied a total of three charges - driving under the influence, failing to provide a roadside breath sample and refusing to give two specimens at the police station.

White, who also has a home in London, split from his second wife, Avril, in 2003 after two years of marriage. Around the same time police were called to a domestic dispute involving the couple at the home they shared in Pollokshields. No action was taken.

His first marriage lasted 10 years and ended in 1995.

The former Kelvinside Academy pupil studied journalism at Napier College, Edinburgh, before embarking on a media career with a job on a local newspaper in 1974.

He moved to STV in 1979 as a news and current affairs reporter with Scotland Today.

He later became a stalwart of the station's Scotsport programme before joining Sky Sports in 1998. He fronts the station's Scottish football coverage and is also a presenter on Sky Sports News.
