As an Eaglesham resident, I read with some interest Brian Donnelly's article (November 9) on the investigations carried out by Lord James Douglas Hamilton into the arrival of Rudolf Hess in Scotland in May 1941.

Aside from the various theories advanced for the reason for the deputy Fuehrer's trip - although not the key story known in Eaglesham - your writer is a bit out in his geography, stating that Hess landed in ''South Lanarkshire''. That part of Scotland was ''Lanarkshire'' in 1941, but even worse, the would-be-negotiator actually landed two miles north of our village of Eaglesham, then part of Renfrewshire and now East

Renfrewshire.

As for the missing theory, readers should perhaps ask why the file on Hess's arrival has still to be released

- 63 years on. Something to do with living relatives of a very senior politician of those times - but say no more.
