STEPPING OUT: Dressed in their cassocks, choristers from St Mary's Music School in Edinburgh skip to classes in preparation forWalk to School Week.

The choristers were highlighting Edinburgh City Council's efforts to encourage children and parents to leave cars behind when setting off for lessons as part of the campaign, which begins on Monday. The UKwide scheme, now in its tenth year, is co-ordinated by the National Travelwise Association and Living Streets.

Motoring organisations say one in five motorists takes part in a school run at least once a week and about 40,000 children are injured on Britain's roads every year.

Walk to School Week campaigners say if more families were to walk to school occasionally, then communities would be safer. They claim that families would also experience the environmental and health benefits associated with fewer vehicles in their neighbourhoods.
