Kyle aiming to impress Vogts
KEVIN KYLE hopes to book his place in the Scotland squad to face Holland by shining in front of Berti Vogts today against West Brom.
He said: ''It would be great if we could get a result at the Hawthorns and I think Vogts will be at the game to watch Scott Dobie and me, so that's a bonus. I've never really thought about going to Euro 2004 finals, but now they are creeping up, it can be a reality for me.
''However, the only way I can force my way into the Scotland squad is by doing the business for Sunderland, starting in this game. I should have scored in our last match against Norwich, but it was one of those days. This would be the ideal time to bounce back.''
McLaughlin wary of former colleagues
BRIAN McLaughlin, the St Johnstone winger, believes his former Queen of the South team-mates are genuine first division contenders, no matter how much they play down their chances.
As the Perth side visit Dumfries today, McLaughlin, who has finally shaken off a groin strain, said: ''They say they're just enjoying the novelty of being top, especially as it's the highest they've climbed in 50 years, but that's just for public consumption. I bet that's not what they're saying in the dressing room. They'll fancy their chances of staying the course. We can leapfrog them if we win, though, and we want to go top as soon as possible.''
Sturrock awarded manager prize
Paul Sturrock has been named Nationwide manager of the month after guiding Plymouth Argyle to the top of the second division, confirming his place as one of England's brightest managers.
