A class shot from the Bathgate Bullet

ELLIOTT Bunney, the former Olympic relay silver medallist, showed

hints of a return to his best form when he took the 60 metres title at

the East District Championships yesterday at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall,

writes Doug Gillon.

The Bathgate Bullet showed he is far from a spent force as he clocked

6.75sec., just .04 outside his two-year-old native record. He won from

Ewan Clarke (6.92) and Keith Douglas (6.96) in a race which exposed the

deficiencies of West sprinting -- the winning time at their event the

previous day was 7.10.

But even more impressive -- and Bunney gave his own endorsement of the

youngster's talent -- was the youth double by Ian Mackie of Pitreavie.

The Fifer equalled the 60m age group best of 7.02sec. set by former

European junior champion Bunney, and then went on to claim the Scottish

age group record in the 200m with 22.18.

Another double winner was Neil McMenemy with a championship best of

6.70m in the long jump, then adding the triple with 14.09m.

The Kelly Copiers backed event, being the first women's district

championship since 1988, saw several championship bests. Among the most

impressive was 16-year-old Sinead Dudgeon, a pupil at St Augustine's.

Third in the European Schools 100m and 200m last year, the Edinburgh

AC woman showed rare promise as she took the senior 60m and 200m in

championship bests of 7.73sec. and 24.88.

But she still has some way to go to match Linsey Macdonald, who was 17

when she clocked the current national 200m best of 24.20sec. at Cosford

11 years ago. Winners (* denotes championship best):
