August 10.

I believe that Meg Farquhar was the first woman golf professional in

Britain (August 8).

She became assistant professional to George Smith at Lossiemouth in

1929, aged 19. She was one of four assistant professionals at the Moray

club and learned all the skills of clubmaking and repairing clubs as

well as being an accomplished golf instructor.

Poppy Wingate from Leeds was probably the second woman professional

when she became assistant to her brother at Temple Newsam.

However, Meg Farquhar was the first British woman to enter and compete

on equal terms in a men's national championship when she played in the

Scottish Professional Championship in 1933.

I remember Meg Farquhar well. I was one of the three other assistant

professionals who worked with her at the Moray club in Lossiemouth.
