Edinburgh Wanderers 15, Glasgow High/Kelvinside 45

THEY say the sign of a great team is one which can still record

comfortable wins when playing badly. Step forward Glasgow High/

It was left to GHK coach Brian Gilbert to sum matters up in his own

inimitable style: ''It was all right when we stopped guddling about and

started to play some rugby.'' The Old Anniesland faithful can now look

forward to the return of first division rugby next season.

While the plaudits are being dished out, it is worth mentioning that

winger Ewan Gillies became only the second Edinburgh Wanderer in 125

years to play 400 times for the club.

The day, ultimately, belonged to the visitors in general and full back

Harry Bassi in particular. This ever-maturing and improving player

helped himself to 25 of his side's haul with a try, four conversions,

and four penalty goals.

The experienced back row and Cammy Little showed their mettle,

eventually, and around them was built much of the success.

Stewart Dennis played a captain's role for Wanderers but could not

hold back the tide. Robbie Bremner shows promise, and hats off to Colin

Gillan for his superb run when, joy of joys, he beat his man with inches

to spare at the touchline.

Little's opening try was from the textbook with Kenny Wilson taking

two-handed at the lineout, Alan Watt driving, and the scrum half darting

over on the blind side. Bassi converted then added two first-half

penalty goals.

Gillan's interception and 40-metre dash for a try which Bremner

converted, before adding a penalty goal, was the home side's first-half

Magnus Lorrain-Smith capped another fine all-round display with a try

early in the second half before Bassi's two further penalty goals were

followed by a 20-minute onslaught by GHK which Wanderers could do little

to hold back.

A try for Walter Malcolm, immense as always, was followed by tries for

Tim Sanderson off Shade Munro's breenge, Bassi born of Fergus Wallace's

neat flick between his legs, and Little from a swiftly taken penalty in

stoppage time. Bassi completed his tally by converting three of the
