THE Faculty of Advocates yesterday announced the appointment of its

first director of training and education. Mr John Sturrock, a practising

member of Bar since 1986, will serve a three-year term.

Mr Alan Johnston QC, dean of the faculty, said the Bar was now faced

with many important questions.

''For example, to ensure that its standards of excellence are

maintained, should it set new entry requirements? Should numbers of

entrants be limited? Should continuing education for members become

compulsory?

''It is quite clear that the faculty, in considering these matters,

must invest considerable new resources in education and training, and in

continuous professional development. Mr Sturrock's appointment is an

important first step.''

Mr Sturrock will continue in full-time practice, apart from a

six-month period from April to October 1994.

He will spend that time setting up a training programme for new

members of faculty, arranging for the training of teachers, preparing

materials, and organising a programme of continuing education and

training.
