MR John Reid, a former provost of Greenock, and Strathclyde regional

councillor, has died. He was 85.

Mr Reid was first elected a Labour member of Greenock Corporation in

1945 and was a councillor for almost 30 years. He held the office of

burgh treasurer, and provost from 1959 until 1962.

At various times, he was convener of virtually every committee on the

corporation, including housing, town planning, libraries and cemeteries,

and parks.

In 1966, he was awarded the OBE. He was an honorary sheriff at

Greenock and, in 1974, was elected to Strathclyde Regional Council.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, and by two married daughters.

His funeral takes place today in St Patrick's RC Church in Greenock.
