KENNY Logan will make his much-awaited comeback to rugby tomorrow. The
international full back-cum-wing is in Stirling County's team for the
McEwan's national league first-division match against Jed-Forest at
Bridgehaugh.
Logan, who missed the start of the season because of an Achilles
injury sustained during Scotland's tour in Argentina in May and June,
returns in his current international role on the left wing. His optional
position, full back, is taken by Shane Williamson, the South African
whom Stirling dropped as stand-off last week.
Williamson was hard done by to be omitted after County's 17-9 win over
West of Scotland two weeks ago, and the Stirling selectors seem to have
had a partial change of heart. The thinking seems to be that he is too
good to leave out.
Jed have had to leave a blank at full back as the promising Chris
Richards has to rest a leg muscle that he damaged while playing rugby in
Australia. The expectation is that, by missing the Bridgehaugh match, he
will be fit for the Hawick game next week.
Two first division club captains, John Lonergan and Kevin Barrie, are
unavailable because of weddings. Calum (''Howler'') Brown -- not to be
confused with his namesake, ''Beige,'' the flanker -- will be Jed's
hooker instead of Barrie, and Stuart Campbell, covering Lonergan's
absence, returns to the West pack against GHK at Old Anniesland.
West have also listed Sandy Crear, in the hope that he will have
recovered from the knee injury he took in the friendly against his
former Ayr colleagues three weeks ago.
GHK, one of four clubs with maximum points after two matches, have to
make an enforced change at centre. Tim Sanderson returns in place of
Tony Glasgow, who is unavailable because of Army commitments. Heriot's,
beaten by GHK last week, switch their New Zealand recruit, Craig
Humphries, from blind side to lock and give 17-year-old David Short his
senior debut in the Inverleith match against local rivals, Stewart's
Melville.
Short, past captain of George Heriot's School, has led the national
under-15 and under-16 teams, and as a student at Stirling University, he
was awarded the first rugby bursary in Scotland.
Alan Kittle, the Stewart's Melville prop in Scotland's World Cup
preparation squad, returns for the home club after injury. So do Murray
Thomson and Peter Flockhart.
Brian Renwick, back from holiday, resumes for Hawick against Dundee in
the Mansfield Park match between clubs each seeking a first league win
of the season. Tom Smith, the former Scottish Schools forward, is back
at loose head for Dundee.
Another schools cap, Jamie Weston, the former Merchiston scrum half,
has opted for under-19 district rugby with Edinburgh rather than
Glasgow. With the capital team, he will continue his liaison with Frank
Hadden, Merchiston's coach.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
