CATHERINE Morrison's first boxing promotion at Paisley Ice Rink on

Saturday night proved to be such a success that she plans on going back

there in September, but the return to action of former British

lightweight champion Steve Boyle left much to be desired.

Boyle, out of boxing for a year, did manage a points victory over late

substitute Mark Antony from Worksop, but it was an untidy, bad tempered

contest, which saw both boxers having to be pulled away from one another

by their corner men after the final bell.

Boyle had hoped to impress enough to be considered a suitable

challenger for current British champion Paul Burke, but he claimed that

he had damaged his left hand in the first round and had to fight

virtually one-handed for the rest of the contest.

Even allowing for the handicap, the Glasgow man was never convincing

against an average opponent.

In contrast, flyweights Neil Armstrong and Louis Veitch put on a

splendid show over 10 rounds, with Paisley's Armstrong edging out

Anglo-Scot Veitch by just half a point to win the newly-struck

Caledonian Cup.

Ringside opinions were sharply divided, but I thought Armstrong's

cleaner, more accurate punching earned him the verdict against a tough

little opponent, who originally hailed from Barrhead but now lives in

Blackpool. Other results:
